The “string of beads” is mainly used to count repeated mantras. So in fact, it serves the same purpose as a rosary. Beads made of (semi-)precious stones, pearls, Bodhi seeds, bone or wood can be used for all purposes, such as counting any type of mantra or other forms of prayer, making prostrations, circumambulations and so on. The cord is the same for all malas and should have nine strands, symbolizing Buddha Vajradhara and the eight Bodhisattvas. The largest bead at the end represents wisdom, the realization of absolute emptiness, and the cylindrical bead at the top of the large bead symbolizes emptiness itself. Together, they symbolize triumph over all adversaries.
 
The mala with 108 beads is used while reciting or chanting mantras. 108 is the ideal number for all kinds of purposes. It is important that our thoughts are pure while reciting or chanting the mantra. The mantra is the practical use of secret powers that can help our progress. Mantra means a collection of letters of the alphabet. The effect will be produced by repeating the mantra over and over again, and will become deeper as we continue this recitation. Essential is the sound that is produced when reciting. This sound creates a unique spiritual imprint on the person who is reciting. It is said that a mantra is like a human being; there are different stages to go through before reaching the final effect: “The purification of mental impressions.” There are different mantras with inherent potential power; these cannot be transferred personally from master to initiate. These are the so-called “Siddha Mantras.”
