In Old Norse, the word “Valkyrie” means “chooser of the slain,” which describes their role in Norse mythology. They were Odin's handmaidens who rushed onto the battlefield to choose Viking warriors who had died bravely in combat.
Valkyries are described as female warriors. They descend from the sky on horses and are dressed in swan feathers that enable them to fly. They also wear sturdy iron chain mail that falls to their knees and a helmet, just like any male warrior.
They carry shiny spears, which are also Odin's favorite weapon.
